Construction on the gas station is in full swing, and Big Chickie’s new space is starting to take shape. While the hammers are swinging inside, we’ve been thinking a lot about how we can make our outdoor space awesome for our customers and beautiful for the whole neighborhood of Hillman City.

We got our friend and neighbor Curtis LaPierre, a landscape architect, in on the fun when we took him up on his offer to create a landscape plan for Big Chickie. Over a dinner of chicken enchiladas, Curtis listened patiently to our excited plans for Big Chickie, and our hopes for making the outdoor space garden-like and beautiful to walk, drive, or bike by.

The biggest challenge for making our garden dreams come true? Our budget. Unexpected costs for projects like rebuilding a curb on Rainier Avenue have eaten into our landscaping budget. Over dessert, Curtis told us he could sketch out a lovely, drought-tolerant landscape plan that could be achieved with a reasonable budget. Our part of the bargain? Figure out the funds to make it happen.

Crowd funding feels like a natural way to raise money to make Big Chickie’s outdoor space beautiful for our customers and for Hillman City - it’s a great way to get neighbors and friends involved in the effort. What’s more, we figured we could offer some cool perks for folks who contribute to the campaign, like tickets to our pre-opening party and Big Chickie t-shirts!

Matt and I hope you’ll check out our crowd funding video to learn more about our plans for Big Chickie, and why we need your help to make it all happen. Here are a couple of things you can do to get involved:

  1. Watch the video and consider contributing.
  2. Share the video and site with friends, co-workers, neighbors… anyone who might be interested!
  3. Come by for some pollo a la brasa and sides once we open later this summer. We can’t wait to serve you and your family some dinner!
